Starnet Design Awards

Annually the Starnet Design Awards celebrate the high-quality projects completed by Starnet flooring contractors in partnership with architects, designers, and Starnet aligned manufacturing partners. Category gold, silver, bronze winners are selected by a panel of judges in five categories including Corporate, Education, Healthcare, Hospitality and Public Spaces and Mixed-Use Developments. Each category gold winner competes for the overall Grand Prize award. Additional awards are presented for the Unique Installation Challenge, Single Source Interior Contractor Award, Canadian Project of the Year and coveted People’s Choice voted upon by Starnet network partners.

Submissions in the Starnet Design Awards are open all year long with winners being announced during Starnet’s Annual Spring Meeting. All entry nominees and winners receive promotional materials to market their project entry(s) in their local market and promoted by Starnet nationally in the press, social media and other channels.


Corporate Workplace Flooring

Workplace interior design goes beyond aesthetics. It directly impacts employee well-being, productivity, creativity, collaboration, and the overall success of the organization.   • DCO Commercial Floors won gold in the Corporate category for its work in the stunning and innovative office space at The Battery Atlanta. This project was a joint venture between DCO Commercial Floors and Starnet member Occupied Renovations who provided finish design services. This office space fulfilled all the goals of creating a space that lends itself to a collaborative work environment, a forward-thinking design, and a place that allows comfort and collaboration.
  • Perrigo North American Corporate Headquarters Grand Rapids, MI
  • Their new Tock headquarters nurtures hybrid work and flexibility and embraces the logic of both at-home and in-person work ingrained in their tech roots. The space offers many options where staff can work, from phone booths to a bright cafe to plug-and-play monitors in the open office. The carpet follows the minimalistic and modern design, while providing comfortable spaces to work and socialize.

Education Flooring

The choice of flooring in educational institutions is crucial for safety, comfort, acoustics, durability, aesthetics, and hygiene. It directly impacts the learning experience, well-being, and productivity of students and staff. Selecting appropriate flooring materials and designs that meet the unique requirements of educational spaces is essential for creating an optimal and conducive learning environment.

  • DCO Commercial Floors won gold in the Corporate category for its work in the stunning and innovative office space at The Battery Atlanta.   • Gold in Unique Installation was awarded to Wall 2 Wall Floorcoverings for their work at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. The project was a complex replacement of the existing building that took place while the school remained operational over COVID. Taking center stage in this award-winning project was the numerous grand graphic inlays and the flooring installers’ talents hand-cutting and installing the intricate patterns for the floor design.
  • Cornerstone Commercial Flooring took home Grand Prize and the Gold in Education for its work on Park Elementary School. An integral part of this design was the creation of a “schoolhouse” for each grade comprised of classroom clusters around a central collaborative area. Each schoolhouse was given its own color for wayfinding purposes, with flooring playing a critical part in this equation.

Healthcare Flooring

Healthcare design plays a vital role in creating healing environments, enhancing patient experience, ensuring safety and infection control, optimizing workflow, accommodating technological advancements, supporting staff well-being, and meeting regulatory standards. It contributes to the overall quality of care provided and helps healthcare organizations deliver effective and patient-centered services.

  • The 2023 Grand Prize was presented to Commercial Flooring Systems. This project involved the construction of a new nine-story tower and a 55,000-square-foot renovation of the existing hospital. The facility’s design incorporates a vibrant blend of colors, creative patterns, and innovative elements that promote healing and comfort, creating a welcoming atmosphere for children and their families to relax and recover.
  • Starnet Member LVR Commercial Flooring took home Gold in Healthcare for its work on University Medical Center Emergency Center Pediatric and Radiology Renovation. The state-of-the-art facility in Lubbock, TX was triumphantly transformed into a brightly colored pediatric-friendly area by creating a new and dedicated children’s entrance and waiting area.
  • Featuring 15,000 square yards of sheet vinyl, 24,000 square feet of VCT, 3,500 square yards of carpet tile, 3,200 square feet of gymnasium rubber and four miles of contoured base, Floor Systems & Design took home the Gold in this year’s People’s Choice Awards for its work on the Nationwide Children’s Behavioral Health Pavilion. Located in downtown Columbus Ohio, it is America’s largest behavioral health treatment and research center for children and adolescents.

Hospitality and Public Space Flooring

Hospitality interior design plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming and immersive environment for guests in hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other hospitality establishments. The design is essential for creating memorable guest experiences, reflecting the brand identity, optimizing functionality, and gaining a competitive advantage in the industry. It combines aesthetics, functionality, and practicality to enhance guest satisfaction, operational efficiency, and overall success.

  • Consolidated Flooring’s work on LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B won gold in the Hospitality and Public space category. The project symbolizes the transformation of one of the nation’s highest-profile terminals. The design draws on the architecture, history, and geography of New York city. The flooring was used masterfully to accentuate the design elements, encourage traffic flow, and hide heavy traffic wear throughout the grand space.
  • This year's gold in People’s Choice went to Image Flooring on the Flint Hills Discovery Center Playscape. Annually, the People's Choice award is selected by Starnet members, preferred vendors, and the press. The award-winning project utilized an abstract topographical map flooring layout with curved geometrics and bold, earthy colors that coordinated with the Center's branding. The completed project resulted in a beautiful educational space for children to safely explore the natural world.
  • The design concept began with a study of the neighborhood, the dynamic Fulton Market. The space is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, so one is surrounded by natural light, downtown views, and the constant movement of the former industrial district. A sophisticated, neutral palette creates a backdrop for gentle nods to the neighborhood’s industrial character such as exposed concrete, metal, knurled handles, and brick-laid subway tile. The aesthetic is truly a celebration of the floor.

Mixed Use Developments

Mixed-use developments have become popular in urban planning and architecture as they offer a blend of residential, commercial, and sometimes even industrial spaces within a single development. Designing the interior spaces of mixed-use developments requires careful consideration of functionality, aesthetics, and the specific needs of each component.

  • The winner of the Mixed-Use Development category was completed by Starnet Member DCO Commercial Floors, The Oleander is a luxury apartment complex featuring high-grade materials and amenities making it anything but an average apartment complex. Modern tile textures pervade public spaces while shock-absorbing floors help the Oleander’s residents burn calories and stay healthy in the gym.
  • History meets innovation with the winner of the Mixed-Use Category. Located in the heart of the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter in downtown Winston-Salem, the newly renovated Bailey Power Plant was completed by Starnet Member DCO Commercial Floors. Dormant for almost 20 years, the complex now features more than 110,000 square feet of office, retail, and entertainment space. A mixture of carpet tiles, polished concrete and resilient flooring helps provide a modern, updated design aesthetic.
  • Spanning 2.5 million square-feet, the reimagined Old Chicago Post Office is a triumph in urban renewal. The massive building recently underwent an $800 million renovation after sitting empty for several decades—the largest historic redevelopment in American history. Every crack, crevice and hole had to be located, repaired, and brought to historic-appropriate appearance. As a historical landmark, the restoration also had to retain original design characteristics and aesthetics.
