Texas Carpet Recycling Partners with Johnsonite in VCT Recycling
Tarkett’s Joslyn Fagan sent us the floowing information on an interesting new partnership that Johnsonite has developed with Texas Carpet Recycling and Corporate Floors. Texas Carpet Recycling will consolidate the company’s post-consumer VCT and bring it to the Houston facility where it will be recycled into new product. This allows more customers to easily recycle product rather than sending to landfill:
“Johnsonite, the commercial arm of Tarkett and provider of the world’s most integrated high-performance flooring systems, has formed a partnership with Texas Carpet Recycling and Corporate Floors, the first and only full service commercial carpet landfill diversion company in the state of Texas. Through this partnership, Texas Carpet Recycling serves as the central collection point for Johnsonite’s ReStart™ Reclamation and Recycling program in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and will consolidate the company’s post-consumer Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) and transport it to its Houston facility where it will be recycled into new product.
“Tarkett has taken a leadership role in protecting the environment. The company began recycling product more than 50 years ago and was the first resilient flooring manufacturer to reclaim samples. We continue that commitment today as we develop new ways to become more environmentally responsible, whether through product development or strategic partnerships such as this one. As we continue to expand our sustainable efforts, this partnership can grow to include more Tarkett products,” said Gilles de Beaumont, President, Tarkett Commercial Tile.
With a focus on Cradle to Cradle® philosophy, Johnsonite is a leader in sustainability and strong supporter of eco-innovation, incorporating environmental enhancements to all areas of business. In early 2000, Johnsonite introduced its ReStart program, which enables commercial flooring job scrap (rubber, vinyl and linoleum tile and sheet, wall base, floor finishing accessories and tread-cuttings) to be collected and returned to the company to be repurposed or recycled for other products or uses. Since its inception, the ReStart program has recycled over 900 million pounds of material both internally and externally including 55 million pounds of post-consumer material and diverted it from landfills.
Thomas Holland, President of Texas Carpet Recycling and Corporate Floors noted, “Historically, customers haven’t had options for recycling installed VCT flooring and have been challenged to find separate recycling resources for everything in the building – from ceiling tiles and light fixtures to flooring and electronics. We have seen a real need for VCT within the healthcare and education markets and with that, the demand to recycle post-consumer flooring has increased. Together with Johnsonite we can now offer the first large scale recycling program for VCT flooring.”
Texas Carpet Recycling and Corporate Floors offers dealers, contractors, end users and carpet mills a financially viable alternative to throwing away product. The company provides services throughout the Region.
“We believe that sustainability extends beyond the products that are delivered to the market and into manufacturing and company labor practices, community impact, human rights and end of use product responsibility,” said Diane Martel, Vice President, Environmental Planning and Strategy for Tarkett North America. “The Texas Carpet Recycling business model will help us achieve our goals regarding recycling installed floors. The team there has a real interest in environmental stewardship, which is essential to our value proposition.””
